Haghartsin
Located just 15 minutes from Dilijan, the Haghartsin Monastic Complex is a remarkable example of harmony between nature and architecture. Founded between the 9th and 11th centuries, the monastery served as a center of science, education, and culture during the Middle Ages. Within its grounds still stands an ancient oak tree planted by the Zakarian family — a living legacy of centuries past.
Aghavnavanq
Aghavnavank is an 11th–12th century monastic complex located 26 km from Dilijan, nestled in a secluded area surrounded by fir trees and ancient woodland. It once served as a place of seclusion for monks and also held strategic importance, functioning as a signal point in times of impending danger.
Goshavanq
Goshavank is a 12th–13th century monastic complex located 15 km from Dilijan, in the village of Gosh. It was founded by Mkhitar Gosh — the author of the first Armenian “Code of Law” — whose tomb is still preserved on the site. The monastery served as a significant educational and cultural center in medieval Armenia, and within its grounds stands the exquisite “Needlework” khachkar (cross-stone), known for its intricate carvings. Not far from Goshavank, in the Dilijan Nature Reserve, lies the picturesque Lake Gosh.
Natural Monuments
Akhnafat Nature Reserve
The Akhnafat Nature Reserve, located near Dilijan at an altitude of 1,400–1,700 meters, is one of Armenia’s 26 state-protected reserves. It is home to unique juniper groves that are 300–400 years old, with trees reaching up to 25 meters in height. Juniper wood is known for its reddish hue and durability, and has been used since ancient times in the making of sarcophagi, military equipment, and household items.
Dilijan National Park
Dilijan National Park was established in 1958 with the goal of preserving the region’s rich flora and fauna. Covering an area of 24,232 hectares, the park is home to nearly half of the plant species found in the Caucasus, many of which are endemic. Its dense forests, mountain lakes, and picturesque peaks make it a beloved destination for nature lovers and tourists alike.
The Drunken Forest
Not far from Dilijan lies the “Drunken Forest” — an unusual pine forest where the trees have grown crooked due to a landslide. This unique natural phenomenon has become a favorite spot for tourists, thanks to its scenic trail, elevated location, and breathtaking sunsets visible from the cliffside.
Parz Lake
Located not far from Dilijan, at an altitude of around 1,400 meters, Parz Lake is surrounded by dense forest and fed by crystal-clear mountain springs. It is the largest lake in the area, measuring 385 meters in length and over 5 meters in depth. The lake is known for its transparent waters and the serene, secluded atmosphere it offers to visitors.
Gosh Lake
Not far from Goshavank lies Lake Gosh — a picturesque landslide-formed basin completely surrounded by dense forest. The lake not only captivates with its scenic beauty but also serves as an important ecosystem, providing a haven for numerous bird and insect species.
Dimats Mountain
Dimats is a 2,378-meter-high mountain peak located 5 km northwest of the village of Haghartsin. It stands out with its impressive panoramic views and rich biodiversity, and can be seen from almost every part of Dilijan and along many of the trails within the nature reserve.
Ayriqar Mountain
Ayrikar Mountain, rising to 2,610 meters, is one of the most iconic and striking landmarks in the Dilijan region. Often referred to as “Simba’s Mountain” due to its resemblance to the “Pride Rock” from The Lion King, it may not be the region’s highest peak, but it captivates visitors with its dramatic and expressive appearance.
